8th October 2016, Djibouti: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) through its Special Mission to Somalia (SMS) has organized a training workshop on strategic planning and policy formulation for senior officials from the Federal Government of Somalia from tomorrow in Nairobi.

“This is part of the tangible interventions that we are doing in collaboration with our development partners for Somalia,” the IGAD Executive Secretary, Amb (Eng.) Mahboub Maalim has pointed out on the eve of the training, adding that more of them will be done alongside other capacity building activities.

The one-week training workshop will be conducted by a group of consultants for the 40 participants drawn from the Ministry of Planning of the Federal Government, as well as the Regional Administrations of Jubaland, South West, Galmudug and Hirshabelle.

With the financial support from the European Union, the workshop will strengthen the knowledge of the government officials and boost their capacity for strategic planning and policy formulation.

The Deputy Director in the Economic and Trade Directorate of Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mr Joshua Mugodo will open the training workshop accompanied by the IGAD Special Envoy to Somalia, Dr Mohamed Guyo at the Hilton Hotel on Monday at 9.00 am. ENDS

Djibouti (Rep. of Djibouti): It is with shock and sadness that the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) learnt that the Al Shabab terror group carried out multiple attacks yesterday targeting Mogadishu International Airport, the HQ of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), UN offices and the Peace Hotel in Mogadishu claiming the lives of members of the Somali police forces.

October 25 2016: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Government of Somalia awarded IGAD staffs Mr. Abdikarim Mohamed and Mr jemal Ahmed, for their efforts towards the formation of the newly established Hirshebele State of Somalia. Dr. Yahye Ali Ibrahim, the permanent secretary of Ministry of Interior and Federal affairs of Somalia was also awarded together with the IGAD staff.

Following the appointment of Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey as the Special Envoy on the Somali Refugee Situation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Before his appointment, Amb Affey was the IGAD Special Envoy to Somalia since 2013. According to a message for the UNHCR, he will now help to maximize efforts to search solutions for Somali refugees and asylum seekers at national and regional level and strive to enhance dialogue between Governments of asylum countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Yemen), Somalia and the international community to help maintain asylum for Somali refugees.

March 17, 2016: Following the recent inter and intra-clan reconciliation peace agreement reached on March 16, 2016 in Kismayo, Somalia, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) takes this opportunity to welcome and congratulate the Federal Government of Somalia and the Jubaland people and their leaders for this historical achievement.
