The IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan, Amb. Ismail Wais (PhD), congratulated the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) and the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) led by Hon. Pagan Amum of Real SPLM and Gen. Paul Malong of SSUF/A on the signing of the Declaration of Recommitment to the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement of 21st December 2017, Rome Declaration of 12th January 2020 and Rome Resolution of 13th February 2020, on 8th March 2021 in Naivasha, Kenya.

Amb. Wais said “this is a step in the right direction towards an all-inclusive and comprehensive peace process in South Sudan”. He urged the negotiating parties to keep the momentum and sign the Declaration of Principles that will form the basis for subsequent talks on substantive political issues.

The current round of talk between the RTGoNU and SSOMA (Real SPLM and SSUF/A) that is taking place in Naivasha, Kenya, from 8th to 12th March 2021, under the auspices of the Community of Sant’Egidio and with the political support of IGAD, is co-organized with the Government of Kenya and is a continuation of the Rome Initiative.
